What Is Boudoir Photography?

Boudoir means something different to every photographer. For some, it’s about taking sexy photos. I have a different philosophy. I do not take sexy photos of my clients. Well, not directly. I don’t know many (or any) women who want to be desired solely for their physical appearance. It’s about her strength, and resolve, and dedication, and passion, and intelligence, and contribution. And when she can stand in her feminine energy and radiate with confidence, that’s when the magic happens.

This is why my style of photography is not about creating ‘sexy scenes’ and doing seductive poses. That’s too on the surface, and to me, it feels forced. It’s like seeing special effects in a movie. Even if it’s done really well, it’s still not real. I focus on helping my clients see the strong, beautiful, feminine, desirable woman they are. And the confidence that comes from seeing themselves like that is sexier than any pose.

Different Kinds Of Boudoir Shoots

Since photography is art, done by an artist, every style is going to be different. This is great because there is a perfect photographer for everyone. You don’t have to settle.

Light and airy – this is the most common style you will see because it is the easiest to do. If you look on Pinterest, you’ll be able to spot it right away. The scenes are really bright and white is the prominent color.

Pinup – this is a more stylized look and is perfect for anyone who loves a vintage look. If this is your style, find a photographer who specializes in vintage looks. You will be much happier with your experience and your photos that way.

Dark and moody – This is my favorite style to shoot, and it is the most difficult to do. I love this look because of how mysterious it is. Rather than showing everything, you’re leaving a lot up to the imagination, and that leads to some very powerful images.

Erotic – 50 Shades made this genre more popular in the last few years. This style is more explicit and openly sexual. It can be ‘a little kinky’ and more playful, or very provocative and explicit, or anywhere in between. It can be light and airy, or dark and moody. Not every photographer is comfortable shooting this kind of imagery. If you’d like to take some more risqué photos during your session, before the photo shoot, be open with the photographer and clearly establish what you want and what you do not want. Set clear expectations and you’ve have a great experience!

Why do a boudoir shoot?

Photo shoots are usually done to celebrate a specific event in someone’s life, such as a wedding, graduation, birthday, etc. Boudoir is no different. However, the reasons for doing this kind of photo shoot are unique to this genre. Here are a couple examples of why women choose to book a boudoir shoot.

Maternity – These sessions are for women to celebrate their experience during pregnancy. I have another article on when to book your maternity shoot. A good photographer can help you plan the right time, the best outfits, and know the right poses.

Bridal – This kind of photo shoot is done as a gift for your partner on your wedding day. It is traditionally done with white outfits and lingerie, but it is entirely up to you! It’s about creating a special, personal, intimate gift that is all about you.

Fitness Goals – When someone has reaches their fitness or weight loss goals, a photo shoot is a great way to celebrate that. Some women do a photo shoot after losing baby weight, or right after competing in a fitness competition before returning to their normal diet and exercise routines.
